EHR and practice management for mental / behavioral health

Pain Point: Changing ICD & CPT Codes

PIMSY practice management for psychiatry offers integrated ICD crosswalk

For our clients and the practices we have heard about, ICD-10 has not yet been the firestorm we were warned about.

Whether that’s because the powers-that-be did such a great job sounding the alarm that everyone was well prepared – or whether the transition was simply smaller in scope than we were all led to believe – it hasn't yet been the crippling blow to healthcare that many had feared

ICD-10 Wrap Up

That being said, it may be some time before the full ramifications of ICD-10 are realized. Many practices bill 1-3 months after the date of service, which means that a lot of agencies submitted a wave of ICD-10 diagnosed claims at the beginning of January, and some practices may just now be receiving their first round of reimbursements for “ICD-10 claims”.

> How did you handle ICD-10?
> Have you noticed a change in reimbursements?
> Do you think your practice revenue flow will end up being affected by the transition?
> If you're using an EHR, are you happy with the way it handled ICD-10 and the tools the vendor provided to switch diagnosis codes?

Keep in mind that some Practice Management Systems offer integrated crosswalks that help providers easily convert their commonly used ICD-9 codes into the best ICD-10 matches. If you’re not happy with your ICD processes, keep in mind that there are options and alternatives available

CPT Codes Changed Again

Mental health had some major CPT code shifts in January of 2013, and a fresh round of CPT changes just went into effect on 1.1.16. It can be very difficult for individual providers – or even large agencies – to keep up with all of the perpetually shifting policies of our industry. It sometimes seems like mental health gets a double, or even triple, whammy.

This is one area where Practice Management software can help. While each practice is responsible for staying on top of healthcare laws – and the EHR should not assume responsibility or liability for staying compliant – your EMR can be of great help in keeping ahead of the curve

How Can an EHR / Practice Management Software Help?

Your practice management system may be able to help you in more ways than you realize. It behooves you to contact your EHR vendor (or any EHRs you're considering) and see what resources they have available for your use. For example, PIMSY helps its clients:

> maintain HIPAA compliance and data security

> easily convert diagnosis codes between ICD-9 and ICD-10 (see video below)

> stay on top of CPT code changes & updates

> differentiate among ICD, DSM and CPT codes – and use them effectively (see sidebar)

> stay aware of PQRS options, deadlines, and regulations (PIMSY offers a unique claims-based PQRS reporting tool that we haven’t seen in any other system!)

> have access to an in-house Meaningful Use consultant who can guide them through the process of qualifying for the grant incentives

> stay well-informed and prepared about changing regulations - via complimentary tools in our Resource Centers and via private compliance webinars just for PIMSY clients

True, ICD-10 was not the firestorm we were warned about. Whether that’s because the powers-that-be did such a great job putting sounding the alarm that everyone was well prepared – or whether the transition was simply much smaller than we were led to believe – the good news is that it wasn’t the crippling blow to healthcare that many feared.
