Meaningful Use Myths (Part 1)

Meaningful Use Myth # 1:
"I've heard that CMS is delaying Meaningful Use and that the 7/1/14 deadline no longer applies"
The answer is yes AND no: there is a Proposed Rule on the table, that is open for public comment until 7/21/14, that would relax the requirements to meet Meaningful Use in 2014. If it goes into effect, this rule would change the 7/1 deadline for first-time participants in the Medicare MU program.
However, because it won't be official until after the 7/1 deadline, it's not worth the risk of incurring a 1% penalty on all Medicare reimbursements in 2015. To be safe, you should either start using an MU certified EHR - or apply for a hardship exemption - by 7/1/14. Click here for the hardship exemption application and here for more information about it.
If you'd like to add to the public comments about this Proposed Rule (anonymous comments are allowed), go to this page and click the "comment now" call to action on the right-hand side.
