Let’s face it: software is a tool that’s only as powerful as your ability to wield it. There is no magic mental health EHR software that can do it all for you without you + your staff steering the ship. However, with solid functionality, reliable training and the engagement of your employees, a practice management system should make you more efficient by reducing the amount of time that it takes to complete tasks.
If properly configured, your behavioral health EMR should save time (thereby reducing costs), while increasing data security + HIPAA compliance. It should help your agency run more smoothly and reduce redundancy. The data should be interconnected, meaning that it’s only entered once but can then be turned into information from multiple angles. For example, entering a payment into the EHR one time should cause it to show up on your A/R sheet, client statement, client receipt, and any other related reports.
Is any system perfect? No, very few people actually love their EHR; there will always be things that could be done differently. But at the end of the day: does it make your practice run more smoothly? Does it increase the effectiveness of the clinicians to treat and serve patients? Does it increase your viability in the (increasingly mobile) marketplace? Do you feel confident that your data is secure + HIPAA compliant? Is your EMR the right fit for your agency? If the answers are yes, then the system has fulfilled its purpose.
