October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) started in 1981 as the Day of Unity to connect advocates working to end violence within families.  The day soon turned into a week and evolved into a month-long observation in 1987.  Activities conducted at the local, state and national levels include the common theme of mourning those who have died due to intimate partner violence (IPV), celebrating the survivors and connecting those to work to end the abuse.

Although one in three women will experience intimate partner or domestic violence in their lifetime and people ages 16-24 are most likely to experience intimate partner violence, anyone, anywhere, regardless of age, race or gender, can be affected by domestic violence.  There are a number of resources available for your clients who may be in domestic violence situations and for you as a health care professional.  Immediate help can always be accessed through the toll free hotline: 1-800-799-SAFE (7233).

Some easy ways to lend your support:

  • Educate yourself about domestic and intimate partner violence, especially the signs to look for in your clients
  • Provide resources to those you suspect may be victims
  • Participate in the NNEDV’s (National Network to End Domestic Violence) Facebook activities, including following their weekly blog series
  • Spread the word and get others involved in support Domestic Violence Awareness Month!

“During National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we stand with all those who have been affected by this terrible crime, recognize the individuals and groups who have stepped forward to break the cycle of violence, and recommit to putting an end to domestic violence in America.”
