PIMSY Provides Secure Encrypted Messaging/Direct Email

by Leigh-Ann Renz, 3.20.15

Secure Direct Email offers data security and helps you meet Meaningful Use Stage 2 core measures

As HIPAA compliance and data security become even more vital to providing comprehensive care, PIMSY mental health EHR now provides secure encrypted messaging.

What is direct email?

Direct email (or secure encrypted messaging) is a protocol for protected data sharing, ensuring that the PHI (protected health information) you exchange with your clients and colleagues is and remains safe, secure, and HIPAA-compliant. Click here for a clear and concise overview of direct email.

Does it meet Meaningful Use requirements?

Yes, the PIMSY secure email option meets the direct method requirement of Meaningful Use Stage 2 Core Measures: 15 (Summary of Care), 7 (Patient Electronic Access), and 17 (Use Secure Electronic Messaging).

General information about MU Stage 2 is available from HealthIT. Details about the Stage 2 Core Measures can be found here (CMS) and here (HealthIT).

How does it work?

Direct email allows you to send anything you choose to your clients: mood surveys, depression tests, lab results, session notes, clinical summaries, etc – in a secure format. It also allows you to send any information you want to other providers, such as clinical summaries, as long as they have a direct email address.

Previously, HIPAA limitations and data security concerns made exchanging this type of PHI risky and prohibitive. Recognizing these concerns, legislative bodies have come together to provide an electronic solution for an increasingly digital world.

Are there any limitations?

You can only send this type of PHI email to other direct email addresses. For example, you wouldn’t be able to email yourclient @gmail.com, as gmail is not a direct email address. Direct email is not technically an email: it’s a secure method of encrypted data transfer that mimics email. Anyone you send PHI to via this method will need to have a direct email address. How do you provide direct email addresses to your clients?

One simple way to obtain secure messaging for your clients is Microsoft Health Vault (MSHV): it automatically provides a free direct email address for individuals (but not practices). This easily allows you to share information with your patients – and offers them a secure method of communicating with other providers as well. Click here to get started.
