Does Mental / Behavioral Health or Substance Abuse Qualify for Meaningful Use?

1. Do You Have Prescribers?

Is there someone at your practice who is an MD, DO or NP? If you have a prescriber at your organization, they may be considered an Eligible Professional (EP). If they have not already committed their Meaningful Use grant funding to another practice, you can have them commit it to yours to participate.

If you don't have any prescribers at your practice, you don't qualify for MU.

2. Do You Receive Medicaid Reimbursements?

Is your client population 30% or greater Medicaid-based? If not, you don't qualify for Medicaid MU. If so, and you have a prescriber, you do.

3. Do You Receive Medicare Reimbursements?

If you have a prescriber and participate in the Medicare program, you are considered an EP for Meaningful Use.

If you qualify for both Medicaid and Medicare, you must pick one program to participate in, or your Medicare reimbursements may be penalized. Click here for details.

4. What are the benefits?

The benefits are financial incentives that help offset the cost of purchasing an EHR. Click here for more information.

5. What are the challenges?

The challenges are attesting to Meaningful Use itself: it's a comprehensive reporting process, and if the attestation is not done correctly, an audit may cause you to have to repay the incentive funds.

6. How do you get it right?

Hire a consultant! The financial benefits to be gained from successful attestation typically cover the cost of a certified EHR and the cost to hire a competent consultant to guide you through the process - with plenty left over. Our in-house MU consultant, Adam Lowell, has successfully completed MU attestation for numerous PIMSY clients.
