Looking for a JotPsych Alternative? An Honest Psychiatry Comparison
JotPsych is good at psychiatry notes. That is usually why you tried it. The reason psychiatrists and psych NPs start shopping is simpler: the draft lives in one place. The chart and the med list live in another.
A JotPsych alternative is not always a cheaper recorder. Plenty of people still want psychiatric documentation AI that can handle an MSE and a med change. Others want the signed note to land where therapy, eprescribing, and billing already run. The search usually starts after the first week of copy-paste.
We’ll put PIMSY on the list. We’ll also name the other tools people actually demo. JotPsych can still be the right call.
Why Psychiatrists Start Looking for JotPsych Alternatives
Give JotPsych the credit it earned. It was built for behavioral health, not adapted from a primary-care SOAP engine. You get MSE sections, med-management formats, and suggested ICD-10, DSM-5-TR, and CPT codes. Sixty-plus templates cover intakes, follow-ups, and E/M plus psychotherapy.1 HIPAA is covered, a BAA is standard, audio is deleted after transcription, and the company says it does not train models on your sessions.2
The snag is where the note goes next, and that is what sends people looking for a JotPsych alternative. For a long time the workflow was record, review, copy, paste. JotPsych now sells an EHR Extension for $8 a month that pushes the finished note into a web-based chart through Chrome.3 Faster than paste. Still a push into a record the AI did not actually sit inside.
Pricing is modular, which some prescribers like. Annual Basic starts at $135 a month for unlimited notes. JotRx (DoseSpot e-prescribing with PDMP) is $62 more.9 JotAudit is $62. JotMeet telehealth is $29. The Everything bundle is $269 a month.3 You can stay light. You can also pay for a scribe, an eRx tool, and the EHR you already have.
A PMHNP in Asheville who does therapy hours and writes scripts feels that stack by week two. The progress note, the med change, and the claim should not require three logins.
One more question for dual-diagnosis programs. JotPsych’s security page covers HIPAA, encryption, and BAAs. It does not mention 42 CFR Part 2.2 Ask in writing before you record SUD encounters.4
What to Check in an Alternative to JotPsych
Skip the grid that scores “AI notes: yes.” Four questions sort a JotPsych alternative faster than a feature list.
Does the MSE read like an exam? Appearance, affect, thought process, and insight are observations. A transcript of what was said will flatten them. APA writing on AI scribes in psychiatry also flags risk language: “I sometimes wonder if it’s worth it” can get over-called as SI or dropped entirely.5
Does the tool see the med list? A 20-minute med check lives on current doses, last lithium, and what you actually sent to the pharmacy. An EHR-integrated AI scribe drafts next to that data. A sidecar drafts in a vacuum, and you become the reconciliation step.
Where does the signed note live? Your legal record is still the EHR, so every push is a failure point. Make the scribe your system of record and you are no longer buying a scribe. You are buying an EHR.
What else has to stay in sync? Eprescribing, treatment planning software, claims, group notes, the therapist’s session and your med check. A Raleigh group with two psychiatrists and six therapists hits this immediately. Split treatment breaks when those notes never share a chart.
PIMSY’s answer is PAISLY AI inside a behavioral health EHR. Prime is $99 a month and includes PAISLY. Notes close on the same record as scheduling, Wiley planners, billing, and ePrescribe through DrFirst or H2H. Therapists and prescribers work from one chart. That is the job we built for.
AI Scribe for Psychiatry vs an EHR-Integrated AI Scribe
Most roundups rank an AI scribe for psychiatry on speed and templates. For a prescriber, the category split is more useful.
Standalone scribes (JotPsych, Mentalyc, Freed, Heidi) generate a note you move into an EHR. Enterprise ambient tools (Abridge, Nabla) embed in hospital systems like Epic. A psychiatry EHR with AI, which is PIMSY plus PAISLY, drafts in the chart you already use for care.
Ambient tools can cut the documentation burden. A 2025 JAMA Network Open study associated outpatient ambient scribing with 20.4% less time in notes per appointment and 30% less after-hours work per workday.6 Those were general outpatient clinics. Psychiatry still asks you to author the MSE and the risk section. Gains shrink if you rewrite both every visit.
JotPsych’s psychiatry depth is the honest reason to pick it. Keep your EHR. Start in minutes. Use BH templates that know a 99214 from a therapy hour. When notes are the only gap, JotPsych can win. Not every JotPsych alternative search needs a new EHR.
We built the other shape of answer. PAISLY is AI for progress notes inside the EHR, not a separate ambient app you bolt on. Platinum is ONC-Certified. 42 CFR Part 2 is part of the compliance story. You are not stitching a scribe onto a therapy product that was never built for medication management visits.
Other JotPsych Alternatives (and Who Each Is For)
Keep PIMSY on a shortlist. So do these.
Mentalyc is therapy-first. Official 2026 monthly pricing runs Mini at $19.99 (40 notes), Basic at $39.99 (100), Pro at $69.99 (160), and Super at $119.99 (330). Psychiatry and med-management templates sit on Pro and up.7 HIPAA, SOC 2 Type II, BAA, PHIPA. No e-prescribing. Best for therapists who want format depth and can copy into the EHR they already pay for.
Freed is a general medical ambient scribe with psychiatry as one specialty among many. Starter is $39 a month on annual billing for 40 notes, Core is $79 unlimited, Premier is $104 annually ($119 monthly) with EHR push and ICD-10/CPT.8 HIPAA and SOC 2 Type II. Fastest trial. Lighter psychiatric structure than JotPsych.
Heidi has a real free tier with unlimited transcription, plus paid Clinician and Teams plans. Native EHR integration sits on team and practice tiers. Broad, multilingual, not psychiatry-native.
Nabla and Abridge are enterprise ambient scribes. Abridge is deepest in Epic health systems and does not publish self-serve pricing. Nabla covers multiple EHRs via SMART on FHIR and sells on contract. Both fit hospital-employed psychiatrists, not a five-prescriber outpatient group.
Who Should Keep JotPsych, and Who Should Switch
Keep JotPsych when you only need notes, you already like your EHR, and you want psychiatry-specific templates without a migration. That is a legitimate fit. A solo psychiatrist in Raleigh with a stable chart and a med-management panel can stop here.
Look past a sidecar when therapists and prescribers share patients. Same story when eRx, treatment plans, and claims should live on one HIPAA compliant EHR, or when you treat SUD under 42 CFR Part 2. A JotPsych alternative in that case is really an EHR, not another note app.
PIMSY is built for that second group. Behavioral health since 2007. PAISLY AI in the chart. One record for therapy and prescribing.
Moving off a sidecar is usually smaller than switching EHRs. Your legal charts already live somewhere else. Replacing the EHR means planning data, templates, and a claims-safe go-live. We’ll walk that against your actual visit types, not a primary-care example.
Conclusion: Pick the Chart the Note Belongs In
The best JotPsych alternative depends on whether you need a better note or a better home for the note. JotPsych is a strong psychiatry scribe, and it can be the right tool when the EHR is staying. When the note, the med list, the therapist’s progress note, and the claim have to agree, an EHR-integrated workflow is the cleaner path.
Want to see PAISLY AI inside PIMSY on a real med-management visit? Schedule a demo. We’ll run the MSE, the med change, and the signed note in one chart.
